JEWELRY CARE

We believe jewelry is meant to be worn every day and for every occasion, and we certainly hope you feel like that with every one of your Alex a Mano pieces. Most of our jewelry requires very little care. However, here are some helpful hints to keep your jewelry looking its best.

Caring for Brass or Copper Jewelry

Even though all Alex a Mano pieces are protected with a thin layer of microcrystalline wax, this will not last forever. Eventually the metal may be exposed to the elements due to regular wear, and that will result in some color change. Our favorite method of cleaning our jewelry is to just use mild soapy water and a soft toothbrush, or a Sunshine Polishing Cloth. We avoid any harsh acids, chemicals (including vinegar and lemon) or “magical” cleaners available in the market.

Caring for Sterling Silver Jewelry

Sterling Silver will tarnish naturally over time, especially when it comes into contact with oxygen or sulfur, but it can be cleaned easily with a soft cloth and silver polish. Wear your silver jewelry often and keep it out of humid areas to reduce tarnishing.

Caring for Oxidized Sterling Silver Jewelry

The black color of oxidized Sterling Silver is achieved by applying a darkening solution (Liver of Sulfur) to the surface of the metal. With time and use, the finish may create a new patina, but in general it will get better with wear! If you would like to keep that blackened color, we recommend to not use any polishing cloth. You can clean it with mild soapy water and a soft toothbrush.

Caring for Gemstones

Depending on the gemstones, they can easily be cleaned with a mild detergent, warm water and a very soft toothbrush. Then rinse and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth or paper towel. If you have a piece of jewelry with metal and gemstones, the rule of thumb is NOT to apply any polishing compounds or chemicals (meant for metals) to the stones. Many gemstones are delicate and porous, like turquoise and pearls, and they will be ruined if in contact with strong cleaners. If you have any doubts about the gemstones you have, we would recommend you bring it to a local jeweler for professional cleaning.

Caring for 14k Gold Jewelry

Fine gold requires little care. Polish with a soft cloth occasionally to remove oils and bring back luster.
